Let me ask you a question.
"What do you do when the farthest thing from your mind - an act of violence in the workplace - is suddenly the only thing you must deal with?"
What would you do, right now, if the employee that you were talking to, suddenly attacked you in a fit of rage?
What would you do, right now, if the door to your office suddenly burst open and a gunman opened fire and began shooting at you?
You can't do what many others who have begun reading this article have done, and simply ignore it. You can't live in denial and pretend it "won't happen to you."
You can't do what others have done and try to figure it out in the moment. If you don't know what to do when an attack is occurring, you can't do the "corporate thing" and call a meeting to discuss the problem before deciding what action to take.
And, you can't wait for the police or security personnel to show up, because they will be too late!
One of the most prevalent problems when it comes to insuring our safety is that most people try to abdicate their own responsibility to someone else.
"That's what the police are for?", is the common response.
When you're being attacked by a violent individual, you have two choices:
1) Take decisive and effective action to neutralize the threat or, at a minimum, reduce the damage that they can do to you. Or...
2) Panic, freeze up, or surrender to your fate.
Instead of taking risks with your life and personal safety, you need to take the action now to get the information and training you need to survive an attack, not just "anywhere," but especially with regards to violence in the workplace.
